POST HIGH SCHOOL PLANNING CALENDAR

2009/2010

 

JUNIOR YEAR

 

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER: 

____    Work on clarifying your career goals and majors.

____    Learn the difference between a certificate of training, an Associate degree, and a

Bachelor degree. 

____    Review your transcript/academic record with your school counselor.

____    Begin researching colleges:

á      You can search for colleges using the VT Guidance Central online program www.vtguidancecentral.com Site ID: 0054704, Password: ÒenosburgÓ.

á      You can also try these search programs on the web:

www.petersons.com

www.CollegeBoard.com

www.collegenet.com

 

____    Sign up for "College Rep" visits in the guidance office.  

____    Attend the 2009 College Fair at University of Vermont Friday September 18 (we

            will go as a school by bus or you can go in the evening with your parents).

____    Sign-up for the PSAT, which will take place Wednesday, October 14, 2009.  The PSAT costs $13.00 (there are some fee waivers available in the Guidance Office for students with financial need).

____    Read the PSAT/NMSQT Student Bulletin. 

____    Attend the VSAC Paying for College night here at EFMHS , Tuesday, October 20, at 6:30pm.

____    Obtain a social security number if you do not already know yours.

 

NOVEMBER: 

____    Meet with your School Counselor regarding your post-high school interests.

____    Review your academic progress. Remember, colleges will be making their decisions based primarily on the grades of your first three years of high school, and your senior year course choices. Michael McRaith A-H, Kate Gallagher I-O and Nicole Lewis P-Z.  A significant improvement will weigh in your favor. 

 

DECEMBER: 

____    Review PSAT scores with your School Counselor, plan strategies &

practice. 

____    Talk with graduates who are home from college.

____    Continue researching post-secondary schools and/or colleges.

 

JANUARY: 

____    Make a preliminary list of colleges 

____    Are SAT II's tests required?

 

____    Review complete list of SAT dates as posted in Guidance. Choose your date wisely.

Consult with your school counselor if you have any questions.

____    Have you started on your Civic Service Graduation Requirements yet?

____    Remember: This is a very important grading period. Do your best! 

 

FEBRUARY:

____    Think carefully about your senior year course choices.

 

Will they meet EFHS graduation requirements?

Will they meet your college's admissions requirements? 

Will they prepare you for College?

 

____    Register for the March 13, 2010 SAT by Feb 4, 2010

 

MARCH: 

____    Register for the May 1, 2010 SAT by March 25, 2010.

____    Attend the Career Fair.

____    Plan and complete your Senior year course selection (A.P. Courses?!!). Remember,

colleges want to see an academically strong senior year.

 

APRIL: 

____    Call or email your post high school choices/programs/colleges for catalogs and applications.  

____    Learn the difference between loans, grants, and scholarships.

____    Register for the June 5, 2010 SAT by April 29, 2010.

 

MAY/JUNE:

____    Take Advanced Placement (AP) exams as necessary.

____    Continue researching post-high school programs/colleges.

____    Complete and return NCAA Initial Eligibility Clearinghouse form if you are

considering playing college sports.  Forms may be obtained through you School

Counselor or at www.ncaa.org

 

SUMMER: 

____    Visit as many colleges/post-high school programs as possible. Call admission offices.

____    Keep thinking about you Senior Year schedule.  Be sure to consider graduation and

college requirements as well as future career goals.
